The Educated Consumer Project ("ECP") provides youths in low - and moderate-income ("LMI") areas in Washington, DC with a comprehensive financial education program. Our mission is to help teens in LMI areas realize their full potential: to be empowered managers of their personal finances, informed and aware of traps that may impede their earnings, and well-versed in financial services and products that can aid in their success. We aim to stimulate the entry of LMI individuals into the formal banking sector to bring about smarter management of debt, movement from renting to owning homes, and elimination of the use of check cashing and payday lending services.

Our strategy is to work in public high schools and charter schools in Washington, DC and bring the curriculum that we have developed - with help from our Community Partners - to the classroom. ECP is operated by a group of individuals in the DC area who are committed to promoting community development through consumer financial education.

We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website and encourage you to learn more about our Financial Literacy Programs, which began at McKinley Technology High School in Fall 2006. ECP expanded its reach to serve three additional schools during fall 2007. Both the Parkside and Capitol Hill campuses of the Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy as well as the SEED Public Charter School collaborated with ECP in an effort to promote financial education and awareness among their student populations through after-school programming. For Spring 2008, both Chavez campuses have endorsed providing an additional ECP course during the school day.

Through the recruitment of volunteer teachers from the University of Maryland, Howard, American, George Washington, and Georgetown Universities, ECP's financial literacy training will impact 150+ high school and university-aged students during the 2007-2008 academic year.
